Vaccines used to only make it into mainstream news channels via the increasingly clamorous anti-vaxx movement, now ‘vaccine' is a synonym for redemption during a pandemic. We have attached our belief in a future to its success, but a vaccine for covid-19 is by no means guaranteed. The polio vaccine took 20 years to develop, we still do not have an AIDS vaccine. The obscure political economy of government financing for vaccination leaves a lot of room for magical thinking and speculation. We need a system for reform / a globally collaborative, off-market pharmaceutical body given that a vaccine is currently the most desired thing in the world; highly controversial, much misunderstood, hyper elusive, ardently awaited.
